Maxi Priest (real name: Max Alfred "Maxi" Elliott) is an English reggae vocalist of Jamaican descent. Maxi is best known for his reggae music songs with an R&B influence, known as reggae fusion.

He was one of the first international artists that succeeded in this music genre, and one of the most successful reggae fusion acts of all time.

One of Maxi's most known and successful songs is "Close to You" which is about a guy who is completely enamored with a girl. The guy knows that this girl is bad news, but he simply can't resist her, as he is ruled by his burning desire.

The girl keeps the guy off guard, like he's walking a tightrope, but when he is holding her in the midnight hour, all is well.

The song "Close to You" used a beat popularized by the band Soul II Soul that appeared on many songs of the era.
