Wild Cherry was an American funk rock band that was formed in Mingo Junction, Ohio, USA and were active between the years 1970-1979. They are best known for their hit song "Play That Funky Music."

Frontman of the band, Rob Parissi wanted to write a hit song, and his plan was to copy from the best, so, he decided to subscribe to Billboard magazine, which charted the hit songs.

When the magazine arrived each week, Parissi would pick out a song or two to copy, but making it just different enough to avoid getting sued. After some time of doing this, he wrote the song that became a major hit that topped the charts, "Play That Funky Music."

In order to create this song, Parissi copied from the song "Fire" by The Ohio Players. Just listen to the bassline and vocal stylings).
