Tina Turner (real name: Anna Mae Bullock) is an American-born Swiss singer, songwriter, actress and dancer.

She rose to international fame as a featured singer along with then Ike Turner's Kings of Rhythm and then continued to record hit singles both with Ike Turner as well as a solo artist. Turner is one of the world's best-selling artists of all time, and was even referred to as The Queen of Rock 'n' Roll in the past.

Here are 5 facts you may not know about Tine Turner:

1. She was born Anna Mae Bullock, but Ike Turner who was her then husband, convinced her to change her name to Tina, because it sounded like "Sheena" who was queen of the jungle.

2. Her hair fell out in 1960 after she tried to bleach it, and ever since she's been wearing wigs.

3. She has been a practicing Buddhist since 1975.

4. She is part Navajo and part Cherokee.

5. She has been living in Switzerland since 1994. Tina Turner relinquished her US citizenship in 2013, and is now a Swiss citizen.

During her music career, Turner was known for her powerful vocals and energetic stage presence. According to Guinness World Records, she has sold more concert tickets than any other solo performer in history.

Tina Turner has won 12 Grammy Awards (8 competitive awards, 3 Grammy Hall of Fame awards, 1 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award). She is also the only female artist that was nominated for a Grammy Award in all categories of pop, rock, and R&B. In 1993, the World Music Awards recognized Turner's years in the music business by awarding her the Legend Award.

Tina Turner is the first female artist that had a top 40 hit in 6 consecutive decades, and overall has had a total of 34 top 40 hits. Rolling Stone magazine ranks her on the 63rd spot on their list of the 100 greatest artists of all time and on the 17th spot on their list of the 100 greatest singers of all time.

Overall, throughout her music career, Turner has sold over 200 million albums and singles all over the world. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991, and in 2014, was also inducted into the SoulMusic Hall of Fame Lifetime Achievement Award. She has received her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the St. Louis Walk of Fame.

Tina Turner has retired from music and performances in 2009.

 

 

Mark Knopfler wrote the song "Private Dancer" for his band Dire Straits, but realized that it didn't work with a guy singing it, so he pitched it to Tina Turner, who was beginning her comeback.

Tina Turner did not realize only until after the song was released that it was perceived as being about a prostitute. Early in her music career, Turner used to do private shows in Texas, so she saw the "private dancer" as someone who performs very innocently at such events.
