Today: July 7.

 

1957: Elvis Presley scored his first UK No.1 hit with the song 'All Shook Up', which was Presley's tenth UK single release. The single went to stay at the top of the chart for seven weeks.

 

1963: The Rolling Stones made their UK TV debut. They performed on the 'Thank Your Lucky Stars' show. On that show also appeared acts like The Cadets, Mickie Most, Gordon Mills and Helen Shapiro. The Stones appeared total of 13 times on the show between 1963-1966.

1966: The Kinks topped the UK singles chart with the song 'Sunny Afternoon', the band's third and last UK No.1 hit.

 

1969: George Harrison recorded his new song 'Here Comes the Sun' at Abbey Road in London. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr also participated at the recordings, as John Lennon was still recovering from a car crash in Scotland, and therefore did not attend the recordings.

1978: Talking Heads released More Songs About Buildings And Food, their second studio album. The first of three Talking Heads LPs produced by collaborator Brian Eno, features the band’s first Top 30 single, 'Take Me to the River', a cover to Al Green's song.

 

1980: Led Zeppelin played their last-ever concert with drummer John Bonham. The performed at Eissporthalle, West Berlin at the end of a European Tour. The setlist included the songs: 'Hot Dog', 'Black Dog', 'All My Love', 'Rock And Roll', 'The Rain Song', 'Trampled Under Foot', 'Kashmir', 'Stairway To Heaven' and 'Since I’ve Been Loving You'. The band finished the concert with a 17-minute version of the song 'Whole Lotta Love'.

1984: Bruce Springsteen topped the US album chart with 'Born In The USA'. The album spent a total of 139 weeks on the US chart. It is also one of three albums along with Thriller by Michael Jackson and Rhythm Nation 1814 by Janet Jackson that produced seven Top 10 US singles.

2006: Syd Barrett died from complications of diabetes he suffered from. He was 60 years old. Barrett was a singer, songwriter, guitarist and one of the founding members of the band Pink Floyd. He was active as a rock musician for only about seven years before he went into seclusion. Barrett joined Pink Floyd in 1965 but had to leave the band only three years later and after only one album. He also released two solo albums before checking himself into self-imposed seclusion, which lasted more than 30 years. Barrett suffered from mental deterioration which were blamed and caused due to his use of drugs.
