1954: While working together for the very first time in a recording studio with Bill Black and Scotty Moore, Elvis Presley decided to fool around a bit during a break with an up-tempo version of 'That's All Right.' Producer Sam Phillips had them all repeat this jam and recorded it. Eventually, it became Elvis Presley's first release on Sun Records.

 

1965: Paul Kantner and Marty Balin formed a Folk-Rock group which would eventually evolve to become the Jefferson Airplane, the premier San Francisco psychedelic band of the late 1960s. They made their debut a month later at a Haight-Ashbury club, and then signed to RCA later that same year.

 

1969: The Rolling Stones performed in London's Hyde Park for free, in front of 250,000-500,000 people approximately. This show was a tribute to Brian Jones who had died two days before. Mick Jagger read an extract from Percy Bysshe Shelley's 'Adonais' and released 3,500 butterflies into the air. This concert was also the debut of guitarist Mick Taylor with the band.

1986: Janet Jackson started a two-week run at the top of the US album chart with 'Control'. The album features the hit singles: 'When I Think of You', 'What Have You Done for Me Lately', 'Control', 'Let's Wait Awhile' and 'Nasty'.

2003: Johnny Cash performed live for the last time when he appeared at the Carter Ranch. Before he sang the song "Ring of Fire", Cash read a statement about his late wife that he had written just before he went on stage: “The spirit of June Carter overshadows me tonight with the love she had for me and the love I have for her. We connect somewhere between here and heaven. She came down for a short visit, I guess, from heaven to visit with me tonight to give me courage and inspiration like she always has.” Johnny Cash died due to of complications from diabetes that same year on September 12.
