Today: July 3.

 

1968: The Equals topped the UK singles chart with the song 'Baby Come Back', The band's only UK No.1 hit. The song was first released in 1966 but failed to enter the chart. It was later covered by Pato Banton in 1994 (with Robin and Ali Campbell of UB40) and became a No.1 hit.

 

1969: Brian Jones in his pool when he was taking a midnight swim. Jones was under the influence of alcohol and drugs and alcohol when he drowned. He was 27 years old. His body was found at the bottom of the pool by Anna Wohlin who was his Swedish girlfriend. The coroner's report stated that the cause of his death was "Death by misadventure", and also noted his liver and heart were heavily enlarged because of the alcohol and drug abuse. He was one of the founding members of The Rolling Stones and in the early 1960’s used the name "Elmo Lewis."

1971: Jim Morrison of The Doors was found dead in a bathtub in Paris, France. He was 27 years old. The cause of death was given as a heart attack. Morrison co-wrote some of The Doors' biggest hits, including ‘Love Me Two Times’, ‘Love Her Madly’, ‘Light My Fire’ and more. On the 25th anniversary of his death, It is estimated that 15,000 people and fans gathered at Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, France in order to pay their respects to Morrison.

 

1973: After 182 Ziggy Stardust concert performances, David Bowie announced that he was going to retire from live performance. Eventually, it was Ziggy Stardust the stage persona that was retiring and not David Bowie himself. Only Mick Ronson, Bowie's guitarist knew about this, which came as a complete shock not only to the fans and audience, but also to the rest of David Bowie's band members and crew.

 

1986: Greg Carroll who was a crew member of U2, was killed in a motorcycle accident in Dublin while he was running an errand for Bono. U2 dedicated the song 'One Tree Hill' that features on The Joshua Tree album to Greg Carroll.

2012: KISS announced that they were planning to release a guitar size book that will contain unseen photographs from their 40-year career. The limited edition called Monster would have a price tag of $4,299 and would stand at 3 feet tall and 2.5 feet wide. It was reported to be the largest music book ever to be published.
