Today: July 29.

 

1965: A film that was shot in a "haze of marijuana" according to The Beatles members. 'Help!', The Beatles second feature film had its UK premiere at The Pavilion in London. According to Ringo's interviews in The Beatles Anthology, during the Austrian Alps film shooting, both he and McCartney ran off over the hill from the "curling" scene set to smoke a nice joint.

 

1966: Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker made their live debut as Cream at The Twisted Wheel, Manchester, England. 'Wheels of Fire', The group's third album, was the world's first platinum-selling double album. Respect!

1968: Gram Parsons decided to leave The Byrds on the eve of a tour of South Africa. He refused to play to segregated audiences.

 

1974: Cass Elliot, Mamas And The Papas singer died in her sleep from a heart attack after playing a sold out show in London, England. She stayed at Harry Nilson's London flat when she passed away. Her solo hits included 'Dream a Little Dream of Me,' which also featured the rest of The Mamas and The Papas and 'It's Getting Better'.

 

1988: Pete Drake, American record producer and pedal steel guitar player, died of lung disease. He Worked with Elvis Presley, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. Played on hits like: Lynn Anderson's ‘Rose Garden’, Charlie Rich's ‘Behind Closed Doors', Bob Dylan's ‘Lay Lady Lay' and Tammy Wynette's ‘Stand by Your Man’.
