Today: July 1.

 

1963: The Beatles recorded the single ‘She Loves You’ / ‘I'll Get You’, at EMI Studios, London. They completed recordings for the the two songs in less than four hours. The single ‘She Loves You’ was released in August of that year and became The band's first million-selling single.

1968: The Band released Music From Big Pink, their debut album. It features the single The Weight, which was their first hit single. The album was recorded in studios in New York and Los Angeles during 1968, and followed the band's backing of Bob Dylan on his 1966 tour (as The Hawks).

1972: Neil Diamond topped the US singles chart with the song 'Song Sung Blue'. It was Diamond's second US No.1 hit and in the UK it reached the number 14 spot.

1972: Slade topped the UK singles chart with 'Take Me Bak 'Ome', the band's second No.1 hit. The song was produced by Chas Chandler, the manager of the band.

1975: 10cc topped the UK singles chart with 'I'm Not In Love'. This instrumental break featured the repeated spoken phrase: "Be quiet, big boys don't cry...". It was spoken by Kathy Warren, who was a receptionist at Strawberry Studios, Stockport, Cheshire where 10cc recorded the song.

1983: A group of guys from New Jersey, who called themselves Bon Jovi signed to Phonogram's Mercury records. They had also been considering to name themselves Johnny Electric. Bon Jovi have sold since that day more than 130 million records all over the world, and performed more than 2,600 concerts in more than 50 different countries for more than 34 million fans.

2000: Kylie Minogue topped the UK singles chart with 'Spinning Around', her fifth No.1 hit. The song was co-written by Paula Abdul, as it was originally intended for Paula Abdul's "comeback" album. The song made Kylie Minogue one of three artists only that had a No.1 hit in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. The other two were U2 and Madonna.

2008: Mel Galley, the guitarist with Whitesnake, died at the age of 60 from cancer of the oesophagus. He also played with Glenn Hughes, Trapeze, Blue Jays and Cozy Powell.
