Today: January 16.

 

1957: The Cavern Club opened in Liverpool, England. It soon became home to many Liverpool bands including The Beatles who appeared and played at the club 292 times.

 

1973: Bruce Springsteen played at Villanova University, Philadelphia, with 25 people as audience. Due to a strike at the time by Villanova's school newspaper The Villanovan, this show went unadvertised, so it seems that this is probably the smallest crowd Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band have ever played in front of.

1978: Sex Pistol Sid Vicious fell through a glass door at a San Francisco hotel. He took a drug overdose and was quickly rushed to a hospital.

 

1980: Paul McCartney was jailed for nine days in Tokyo for possession of 219g of marijuana, after it was found with him on his arrival at Narita Airport in Japan. In 2004 he said that this marijuana was so good, that it would have been a waste to flush it down the toilet, and so he decided to take it with him.

1988: Belinda Carlisle, former Go-Go's band member and singer, scored her first UK No.1 single with 'Heaven Is A Place On Earth.' Academy Award-winning actress Diane Keaton directed the promotional video and it also features an appearance of Morgan Mason, Belinda Carlisle's husband.

1988: George Michael topped the US album charts with his debut solo album 'Faith'. The album sold more than 8 million copies.

 

1992: Eric Clapton recorded his unplugged session for MTV. The setlist included his current hit single st that time 'Tears in Heaven' and a reworked acoustic version of 'Layla'. It earned six Grammy Awards for the album including Record of the Year.
