1954: Johnny Ace shot himself dead backstage at the City Auditorium in Houston, Texas. The R&B singer was playing with a gun during a break between sets, when someone in the room told him to be careful with it. The singer replied that it’s okay since the gun’s not loaded. He then pointed it at himself with a smile on his face and shot himself dead.

 

1964: Beatles fans attacked Patti Boyd, the girlfriend of George Harrison, as they arrived at London's Hammersmith Odeon for tonight's Beatles concert.

1965: Dave Clark Five topped the US singles chart with 'Over And Over'. They became the 7th UK band or musician of 1965 to score a US No.1 single.

 

1965: 'Rubber Soul' by The Beatles started a nine-week run at the top of the UK chart. The album spent a total of 42 weeks on the UK chart and was also a No.1 in the US.

 

1968: Led Zeppelin arrived in the U.S. for the very first time in preparation of their debut North American tour. They were paid an average of $1,500 for each concert.

1981: Michael Jackson called Paul McCartney and suggested that the two will write and record together. The first result was the song ‘The Girl Is Mine’. It reached the No.2 spot in the US and the No.8 spot in the UK in 1982.

 

2006: James Brown, aka the ‘Godfather of Soul’, died at the age of 73 after he was diagnosed with severe pneumonia. Brown went to his dentist in Atlanta the previous day who told him something was wrong, and sent him to a doctor immediately. He had many hits including: ‘Papa's Got a Brand New Bag’, ‘I Got You (I Feel Good)’, and ‘Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine, Pt. 1’. He was married four times, was arrested at the age of 16, for theft and served 3 years in prison. In 1988, he was arrested again, following a high-speed car chase along the Georgia-South Carolina state border.
