Today: April 27.

 

1966: The Beatles started recording 'I'm Only Sleeping', a new song by John Lennon at Abbey Road studios London, England. The song features the unique sound of the time of a reversed guitar duet which was played by George Harrison. It was released two months earlier in the United States on the album Yesterday And Today and did not feature on the original US version of Revolver.

1967: Sandie Shaw topped the UK singles chart with 'Puppet On A String', her third UK No.1 and also the 1967 winner of the Eurovision Song Contest.

 

1969: Pink Floyd appeared at Mothers Club in Erdington, Birmingham, England. John Peel, a radio 1 DJ reviewed the show as if it sounded like dying galaxies lost in sheer corridors of time and space. Recordings from this gig were included in the 1969 album by the band, Ummagumma.

1999: UK band The Verve announced that they had split. The band scored the 1997 UK No.1 hit 'The Drugs Don't Work' and their 1997 UK No.1 album 'Urban Hymns' which spent more than 100 weeks on the UK chart. Richard Ashcroft, leader of the group, decided to go for a solo career and scored the 2000 UK No.3 single 'A Song For The Lovers' and the 2000 UK No.1 album 'Alone With Everybody.'

2003: Madonna topped the UK album chart with 'American Life', her eighth No.1 album. The album also topped the US albums chart.

2009: Aerosmith had to play a free concert in Hawaii to placate angry fans, who brought a legal case against them. Fans filed a class action case, that claimed the band had cancelled a sold-out show in Maui 2 years ago, which as a result left hundreds of fans out of pocket in favor of a bigger gig in Chicago. The Lawyers claimed that Aerosmith had now agreed to put on a new concert, and that they would pay all expenses. Every person who bought a ticket to the original show would receive a free ticket.
