1964: The Beatles had their fourth UK No.1 single with 'Can't Buy Me Love.' With advanced sales of more than 2.1 million copies, the single holds the record for the greatest advanced orders for a single in the UK.

1964: The Beach Boys recorded the single 'I Get Around'. It became their first US No.1 hit in the summer of that year. The song begins with a multi-part a cappella introduction that quickly shifts into rock-style verses which are sung by Mike Love and a pop chorus sung by Brian Wilson in falsetto.

1969: The new band of Bruce Springsteen, Child, made their live debut at the Pandemonium Club in Wanamassa, New Jersey.

1971: Janis Joplin topped the US album charts with the posthumously released Pearl. The album features her No.1 hit 'Me and Bobby McGee', which was written by Kris Kristofferson and Fred Foster on which she played acoustic guitar.

 

1977: ABBA topped the UK singles chart with their fifth No.1 hit, 'Knowing Me, Knowing You.' The song was also a Top 10 hit in more than 15 other countries worldwide.

1977: Fleetwood Mac topped the US album chart with Rumours. The album is the band's most successful release, along with winning the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1978, the album has sold more than 45 million copies all over the world.

1990: Nirvana went into Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin in order to start work on demo versions of the songs ‘Lithium’, ‘In Bloom’, ‘Dive’, ‘Pay To Play’, ‘Imodium’, ‘Polly’ and ‘Sappy’. Butch Vig (today a band member of Garbage) was the producer.
