Tears for Fears are an English pop rock band formed in Bath, England in 1981 by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith.

Tears For Fears were followers of American psychologist Arthur Janov's school of primal therapy, and their successful song 'Shout' was inspired by his primal therapy treatment, which worked by getting people to confront their fears by shouting and screaming.

The band's name came also from Janov's book Prisoners of Pain.

Tears for Fears have sold over 30 million albums worldwide.

The song "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Tears For Fears is about the quest for power, and how it can have unfortunate consequences. Although musically this song is quite catchy and jangly, its lyrical theme is actually pretty dark.

The concept is quite serious, as it's about everybody wanting power, about warfare and the misery that it causes.

The song was the first US No.1 hit for the band, with their song "Shout" following and topping the chart as well two months later.

The song "The Working Hour" by Tears For Fears was written by Roland Orzabal (vocalist of the band), Ian Stanley (keyboardist) and Manny Elias (drummer).

Orzabal wrote the lyric about being sick and tired of people telling him what to do. It was Orzabal's way of kicking out his frustration.

Jerry Marotta contributed to this track, as he was handling saxophone and drums arrangements.

The song "Pale Shelter" by Tears For Fears is about being disappointed in a relationship, and although Roland Orzabal wrote the tune to the song, it is sung by fellow Tears For Fears vocalist Curt Smith.

Deciding which of the two leads would sing a particular song often came down to tone of voice. If it is a softer song, Smith will sing it, but if it requires being belted, Roland will sing it.

Smith's voice is a lot more melancholic and darker, and Roland is more of a shouter, trying to make a point.
