System of a Down is an Armenian-American heavy metal band that was formed in 1994 in Glendale, California. The band consists of Serj Tankian (lead vocals, keyboards), Shavo Odadjian (bass, backing vocals), Daron Malakian (vocals, guitar) and John Dolmayan (drums).

As a student, Serj Tankian had a 4.0 grade-point-average, yet he hated school. Before he joined the band, he worked as a shoe salesman and he also ran a successful software company. Tankian also has his own record label called Serjical Strike and he even published a book of poetry called Cool Gardens, as cool gardens relax him.

Another interesting fact concerns the rest of the band members, as none of them has piercings or tattoos. Also, before Daron Malakian joined the band, Shavo Odadjian who plays bass today, played lead guitar.

System of a Down gained success with the release of 5 studio albums, 3 of the albums even debuted at the top of the Billboard 200, and the band was also nominated for 4 Grammy Awards.

During their music career, the band has sold more than 40 million records all over the world.
