The Spice Girls are an English pop girl group that was formed in London in 1994, and consists of Geri Halliwell ("Ginger Spice"), Melanie Brown ("Scary Spice"), Emma Bunton ("Baby Spice"), Melanie Chisholm ("Sporty Spice") and Victoria Beckham ("Posh Spice").

The Spice Girls came together when the girls answered an ad in a magazine called The Stage. This ad called for any young woman between the ages of 18-23 in order to form a singing group. After the girls were chosen, they began training at Trinity Studios.

The Spice Girls originally named themselves "Touch", but in August 1993, the girls decided to change their name to "The Spice Girls" when they heard a song dedicated to them called "Sugar 'N' Spice."

Another interesting fact that you may not know, is that Emma Bunton actually replaced a girl named Michelle Stephenson, who had to depart and leave the group shortly after being chosen due to family reasons. Emma Bunton was recommended to replace her by the girls' singing teacher.

The Spice Girls have sold 85 million records all over the world, which makes them the best-selling female group of all time, one of the best-selling pop groups of all time, and the biggest British pop success since The Beatles

Among the highest profile acts in 1990s British popular cultureTime called The Spice Girls "arguably the most recognizable face" of Cool Britannia, the mid-1990s celebration of youth culture in the UK.
