Music facts, music trivia, interesting stories and much more. Introducing the "Did You Know" page about Puerto Rican singer and actor, Ricky Martin.
Ricky Martin (real name: Enrique "Ricky" Martín Morales) is a Puerto Rican singer, actor and author, and is considered to be the king of Latin pop.
He grew up in a Roman Catholic home and was an altar boy throughout his childhood. Martin began singing when he was six years old, using wooden kitchen spoons as pretend microphones, and often interpreted songs by Menudo (all-boy pop band) as well as English-language rock groups such as Journey, REO Speedwagon and Led Zeppelin.
At age twelve, Martin began his music career with the all-boy pop group Menudo. After five years with the band, he released several Spanish-language solo albums throughout the 1990s.
When Ricky Martin released the song "Livin' la Vida Loca" in 1999, he attained great success all over the world. This song is generally seen as the song that began the Latin pop explosion of 1999 and made the transition easier for other Spanish-speaking artists to move into the English-speaking market.
Martin's first English-language album has sold 15 million copies and it is his best selling album to date. Since the beginning of his solo career in 1991, Ricky Martin has sold more than 70 million albums, which makes him one of the best-selling Latin music artists of all time.
