Portishead are an English trip hop band that was formed in 1991 in Bristol, England, and are often considered one of the pioneers of trip hop music.

The band named themselves after the small town of Portishead, which is the home town of band member Geoff Barrow, even though claiming to hate this place.

Before releasing their debut album Dummy in 1994, they released a short film with a spy theme called To Kill a Dead Man and also composed the accompanying music.

After the huge success of the band's debut album Dummy, the media pressure was too much to handle for singer Beth Gibbons, so that she refused to do any interviews since that time.

Portishead released two other studio albums since their debut album, which are: Portishead in 1997 and Third in 2008.
