Peter Gabriel is an English singer, songwriter, record producer and humanitarian who rose to fame when he was the original lead singer and flautist of progressive rock band Genesis.

After he left Genesis in 1975, he started a solo career which was extremly successful during the 1980s and 1990s.

Peter Gabriel's best-selling album is his 1986 "So" album, which is certified triple platinum in the UK and five times platinum in the U.S.

The most successful single from the album is "Sledgehammer", that won a record 9 MTV Awards at the 1987 MTV Video Music Awards.

An interesting fact about Peter Gabriel is about his concerts and performances, and it goes like this...

When Peter Gabriel performed during concerts, he used to sing one song at the farthest seat from the stage. In some cases, this required him to run around from the stage door to the front door, in order to access the stairs.

During one show in Germany, the security guard refused to let Gabriel in, as the guard could hear the band playing and thought that Gabriel was trying to blag his way in.

Now, why didn't the guard simply recognize Peter Gabriel? I guess he prefers metal music perhaps...

The song "Sledgehammer" by Peter Gabriel was influenced by the '60s soul music that Gabriel used to listen to as a teenager, in particular Otis Redding, who Peter Gabriel saw perform at the Ram Jam club in 1967 in London.

The song "Sledgehammer" is about sex and the lyrics are loaded with phallic symbols. Gabriel said regarding the theme of the song, that sometimes sex can break through barriers when other forms of communication are not working too well.

The song "Big Time" by Peter Gabriel tells the story of a man from a small town who grows to be larger than life.

The ending of the song is heavily processed as Peter Gabriel's voice gets deeper and deeper, which creates a sense of size until it ends cold.

Peter Gabriel said that this song was "a satirical story about a basic human urge...success."
