The song "Straight Up" by Paula Abdul was her breakout hit, who before she was a singer, was a cheerleader for the Los Angeles Lakers and also a dancer.

The song "Straight Up" finds Paula Abdul all aflutter over a guy who seems too good to be true. She has been hurt before, so now, she wants him to be straight up (honest) with her and tell her if he really loves her, or are they just fooling around.

The song was written and produced by Elliot Wolff, who had co-written a track for Johnny Gill and Gladys Knight & The Pips.

In the US, this song was the best-selling single of 1989.
