Nightwish are a symphonic metal band that was formed in 1996 in Kitee, Finland.

The band was formed by Tuomas Holopainen (lead songwriter, keyboard)Emppu Vuorinen (guitar), and Tarja Turunen (former lead singer). After the band released their debut album, they added Jukka Nevalainen (drums), and Sami Vänskä (bass) to the band.

Here are a few interesting facts about Nightwish:

1. Nightwish are on the third place in the list of best-selling artists in Finland, with certified sales of nearly 900,000 certified copies.

2. "Beauty and the Beast", "The Carpenter", "Once Upon a Troubadour" and "Astral Romance" are the only songs in Nightwish's discography that features the vocals of Tuomas Holopainen.

3. In 2000, Nightwish was accepted in the Finnish Eurovision song contest tryouts with the song "Sleepwalker", but despite winning the public vote, Nightwish finished in second place, as the jury decided to choose local gospel singer, Nina Astrom, to represent Finland in the contest.

Nightwish is the most successful Finnish band worldwide. They have sold more than 9 million records and received more than 60 gold and platinum awards, releasing 5 No.1 albums and 13 No.1 singles. 

On October 26, 2018, Nightwish has been inducted to the Finnish Music Hall of Fame, thus becoming the honorary gallery's 11th member.
