Nelly Furtado is a Canadian singer and songwriter that gained fame and success in the year 2000 with her debut album, Whoa, Nelly!
Nelly Kim Furtado was named after soviet gymnast, Nellie Kim. Furtado started writing songs at age 12 and it was Nelstar, the trip-hop duo that she formed in 1995 with rapper Tallis Newkirk, that established her unique medley of hip-hop, pop, and R&B.
Nelly Furtado won a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance with her song, "I'm Like a Bird" and has sold more than 40 million records all over the world. This makes her one of the most successful Canadian artists to this day.
Besides her Grammy Award win, Furtado has won many awards throughout her music career. These awards are one BRIT Award, one MTV Europe Music Award, one Latin Grammy Award, ten Juno Awards, one Billboard Music Award, one World Music Award and three Much Music Video Awards.
