Enigma is a German musical project that was founded by Romanian-German musician and producer Michael Cretu in 1990.

Michael Cretu said that the inspiration to create of the project came to him from the desire to make a kind of music that did not obey "the old rules and habits", but music that presented a new form of artistic expression with mystic and experimental components.

Enigma's debut album (MCMXC a.D.) from 1990, was recorded at A.R.T. studios in Ibiza, and it is one of the first ever albums that was recorded directly to a hard drive. Most of the vocals on that album have been provided by German singer, Sandra, who was then Michael Cretu's wife and musical partner.

Enigma became famous for its unique and previously unheard mix of Gregorian chats infused on top of dance beats, and received most of the attention for its use of Synthesised shakuhachi flutes, also known as the "Enigma horn".

Enigma has sold more than 8.5 million RIAA-certified albums in the US and approximately 70 million records all over the world, with more than 100 gold and platinum certifications. They were also nominated for the Grammy Award 3 times.
