Today: July 16.

 

1962: The Beach Boys signed with Capitol Records in the US. The band's first hit was in September this of that year with the song 'Surfin' Safari.'

1966: Tommy James and the Shondells started a two week run at the top of the US singles chart with the song 'Hanky Panky', a song that was first recorded by The Raindrops. In the UK, the song reached the No.38 spot.

1966: Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker formed the band Cream. However, the band lasted only 2 years. During that time, they had some fine classics like: ‘Sunshine of Your Love’, ‘Strange Brew’, ‘Badge’ and ‘White Room.’

1969: The Beatles were working on two new songs by George Harrison, 'Here Comes The Sun' and 'Something.' He was inspired to write the song 'Here Comes The Sun' when he took a day off from Apple business and spent the day just walking around the garden at Eric Clapton's house.

2000: Coldplay topped the UK album chart with Parachutes, the band's debut release. The album features the hit songs 'Yellow', 'Shiver', 'Trouble', and 'Don't Panic'. It also won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album in 2002.

2001: Robbie Williams started a two week run at the top of the UK singles chart with the song 'Eternity / The Road To Mandalay.' It was the forth No.1 hit for Williams.

2012: Jon Lord, who was the former keyboard player for Deep Purple, died at the age of 71 after suffering from a pulmonary embolism. He was a co-founder of Deep Purple in 1968 and co-wrote many of the band's songs, including the great hit Smoke On The Water. Lord also played with other bands, including Whitesnake.
