The Carpenters were an American vocal and instrumental duo that were formed in 1969 and consisted of of Karen Carpenter and Richard Carpenter.

The Carpenters had a distinct soft musical style, which combined Karen's contralto vocals with Richard's arranging and composition skills. During the duo's 14 years musical career, they recorded ten albums, along with numerous singles and several television specials.

The Carpenters was one of the best-selling recording acts of the 1970s. Ten of the duo's singles sold at least a million copies, and during an era when rock and roll dominated radio, later came the disco, The Carpenters offered a softer sound, yet many dismissed as too sweet or corny.

During the 1970s, they toured constantly and that put them under great pressure. Richard decided to take a year off in 1979 after he had become addicted to Quaaludes, while Karen suffered from anorexia nervosa.

The musical career of The Carpenters came to and end in 1983 after Karen died due to heart failure which was brought on by complications of her anorexia disease.
