Soul Asylum is an American alternative rock band that was formed in 1981 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The band is best known for the hit song "Runaway Train" that also won the 1993 Grammy Awards.

The song "Runaway Train" was written by lead singer, Dave Pirner. The song is about depression and it took Pirner a few years to complete it. Pirner had the tune in his head, but it wasn't until he went through some dark times himself, that the Runaway Train/Depression metaphor hit him, and then he just wrote the lyrics to the song in a single sitting.
