Sinéad O'Connor is an Irish singer and songwriter who rose to fame in the late 1980s with her debut album The Lion and the Cobra. O'Connor achieved worldwide success in 1990 with a the song "Nothing Compares 2 U", which topped both the US and UK charts.

The song "Nothing Compares 2 U" was written and recorded by Prince in 1984, but wasn't released. Prince first gave the song to a band called The Family who recorded it in 1985, but their version was never released as a single and because of that, the song was seldom heard.

Five years later, in 1990, Sinéad O'Connor covered this song and it topped the charts in 17 countries all over the world. In the U.S. the song was one of the top songs of 1990, when it topped the Hot 100 for four weeks.

Sinéad O'Connor released ten solo albums, but her work also includes songs for films, collaborations with many different artists, and appearances at charity fundraising concerts.
