The Pixies are an American alternative rock band that was formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1986.

The Pixies were slightly ahead of their time and were associated with the alternative rock boom during the 1990s, and includes elements of punk rock and surf rock.

Grunge bands that they influenced had lots of success and radio play just after the band broke up. Many of the Pixies songs were slow in the verses, but then would explode with the chorus. One of the grunge bands that were very influenced by the Pixies and their musical style were Nirvana. Other bands that were influenced by The Pixies are Radiohead, Bush, Weezer and Blur.

As for the name of the band, they decided it after Joey Santiago selected the word "pixies" from a dictionary randomly. He liked its definition of "mischievous little elves."

The Pixies achieved modest popularity in the U.S., but achieved more success in the UK and mainland Europe. The band broke up in 1993, but in 2004 came their reunion.

The song "Where Is My Mind?" by Pixies was written by the band's lead singer Frank Black, who was inspired by a snorkeling adventure. Under water, sometimes the only way to know which way is up, is by looking at the air bubbles.

The song "Where Is My Mind?" was used in the last scene of the 1999 movie Fight Club, which helped introduce the Pixies to a new audience. Many other movies and TV series have used this song, often when a character is questioning his or her grip on reality.
