Garbage is a Scottish–American alternative rock band that was formed in 1993 in Madison, Wisconsin and consists of Scottish musician Shirley Manson (vocals, guitar) and American musicians Steve Marker (guitar), Duke Erikson (guitar, keyboards) and Butch Vig (percussion).

Prior to the formation of Garbage, musicians Butch Vig and Duke Erikson played together in the bands Spooner and Fire Town. After these bands disbanded, the two took on production jobs, with one of Vig's works was producing Nirvana's 1991 album, 'Nevermind'.

Later on, the two decided to collaborate with Steve Marker and they began making music that fused industrial rock with sample based electronic. They were looking in particular for a female singer who could make their dissonant music more poppy, and so auditioned musician and singer, Shirley Manson.

Manso was sure that the audition was a complete disaster, but eventually, still was invited to join the band, and that is the story behind the formation of the band Garbage.

To this day, Garbage have sold more than 17 million albums all over the world and continue to tour.

The song "Only Happy When It Rains" by Garbage is about enjoying being depressed.

The song was written somewhat spur-of-the-moment, when the band members were sitting around playing acoustic guitars. It started with the line, "I'm only happy when it rains," and then was built around that opening lyric.

Butch Vig, drummer of the band, sees this song as "an homage to to the Jesus and Mary chain."

Butch Vig, Garbage drummer, said that the song "Stupid Girl" started when Steve Marker, guitarist of the band, sampled a drum loop by The Clash.

They started putting down this bass groove over it to try and get something kind of groovacious, as Butch described it.

Then, Duke started playing, Shirley Manson started singing, and the whole "Stupid Girl" song was written and done in about 30 minutes.
