Music facts, music trivia, interesting stories and much more. Introducing the "Did You Know" page about Australian rock band, AC/DC.

Enjoy!

AC/DC are an Australian rock band that was formed in 1973 in Sydney by Malcolm Young and Angus Young. Being a hard rock/blues rock band, the music of AC/DC has also been considered as heavy metal, although the band members refer to themselves as "a rock and roll band, nothing more, nothing less".

The band underwent several line-up changes before they released High Voltage, their debut album, which is also our interesting fact of the day. On the release of their album High Voltage in 1976, a review that was published in Rolling Stone magazine called it an "all-time low" for hard rock genre.

In 2008 which is 32 years later, it seems Rolling Stone learned from their mistake and AC/DC appeared on the cover. Over the years, High Voltage went gold in several countries worldwide, including Germany, France and UK and in the US it went 3-times Platinum.

Another interesting fact is about their 1980 album Back in Black, which is not only the highest selling album by AC/DC, selling 50 million units all over the world and 22 million units in the US, it is also the second highest selling album in the history of music, just after the album Thriller by Michael Jackson. Back in Black is the sixth-highest-selling album of all time in the US.

AC/DC have sold over 200 million records all over the world, including 71.5 million albums in the US, making them part of a distinguished list of highest-certified music artists in the US and also on the list of best-selling music artists.

AC/DC is ranked No.4 on VH1's list of "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock" and were also named the seventh "Greatest Heavy Metal Band of All Time" by MTV. In 2004, the band was ranked No.72 on the list of "100 Greatest Artists of All Time" made by Rolling Stone magazine.

AC/DC is an English term for bisexual. The band didn't know this, and has spent a lot of times trying to demonstrate that they like only women.

The band chose the name AC/DC after Angus and Malcolm's sister saw "AC/DC" on a sewing machine, an abbreviation for "Alternating Current/Direct Current."

Another interesting and funny fact about the band, is that they sometimes had trouble getting into their own shows, because the band members looked just as scruffy as their fans.

The song "Back In Black" by AC/DC was released 5 months after the death of lead singer Bon Scott, and this song is a tribute to him.

The band got the idea for the title of the song before even writing any of the song, although Malcolm Young had the main guitar riff for years, and used to play it frequently as a warm-up tune.

After the death of lead singer Bon Scott, Angus Young decided that their first album without him should be called Back In Black in tribute, and they wrote this song around that phrase.
