This Day in Music History: May 28May 28, 2017

We cover all sorts of news, facts and historical and interesting facts that happened on this day in music history.

Today: May 28.

1966: Percy Sledge started a two week run at the top of the US singles chart with the song 'When A Man Loves A Woman'. It reached the No.4 spot on the UK chart and the No.2 spot when it was re-issued in 1987. Before the recording session, the song had no title nor lyrics. The session proceeded with the expectation that Sledge would produce them for the vocal takes. When time came to record the vocals, Sledge improvised them with minimal pre-planning, using the melody as a guide for rhythm and phrasing. The performance was very convincing to the point that others who were working the session assumed he actually had the lyrics written down.

1973: The Dark Side of The Moon by Pink Floyd was on both the UK and US album charts. The album remained on the US charts for 741 discontinuous weeks from 1973 to 1988, longer than any other album in history.
