1970: David Bowie released the single 'The Prettiest Star' in the UK as a follow-up single to 'Space Oddity'. Marc Bolan played guitar on the song. Bowie and Bolan battled the next few years as rivals for the crown of the king of glam rock. Despite receiving good reviews, the single reportedly sold less than 800 copies, which was a big disappointment on the back of the success of 'Space Oddity'.

1982: The Go-Go's started a six-week run at the top of the US album chart with 'Beauty And The Beat.'

2010: Frontman of US band Sparklehorse, Mark Linkous, committed suicide when he shot himself in the heart outside a friend's house in Knoxville, Tennessee. In 1996 Linkous actually "died" for two minutes after ingesting a mix of Valium and antidepressants when he supported Radiohead on tour in the UK. He recovered, but this incident left him paralysed, after lying unconscious for 14 hours, with circulation to his legs cut off. He also suffered a heart attack when doctors tried to straighten the limbs, and had surgery seven times in order to save his legs.
