1956: Kay Starr topped the UK singles chart with 'Rock And Roll Waltz.' The song is told from the point-of-view of a teenager who comes home early from a date, just to catch her parents attempting to dance to one of her rock and roll records.

 

1965: Mick Jagger, Brian Jones and Bill Wyman suffered electrocution from a faulty microphone on stage during a concert by The Rolling Stones in Denmark. Due to this incident, Bill Wyman was knocked unconscious for several minutes.

1969: Marvin Gaye topped the UK singles chart with his song 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine'. It was first recorded by The Miracles and had sold a million copies in 1967 for Gladys Knight and the Pips.

 

1977: Hall and Oates started a three week run at the top of the US singles chart with the song 'Rich Girl', their first US No.1. Unfortunately, the song did not succeed in the UK.

1980: The Police became the first ever Western pop group that played a show in Bombay, India for more than 10 years. The band performed with one gig in the city.

1983: Duran Duran topped the UK singles chart with their song 'Is There Something I Should Know'. It was the band's first No.1 and their eighth single release. The band members were on a US promotional trip on this day, where 5,000 screaming fans welcomed them at an in-store appearance in New York City.

1996: The second studio album by Shania Twain, The Woman in Me, topped the Country chart. The album became her biggest-selling album at the time of its release, as it sold 4 million copies by the end of the year.

2000: Santana started a two-week run at the top of the UK album chart with 'Supernatural.' The album won eight Grammy Awards including: Song Of The Year, Album Of The Year and Record Of The Year.

2016: 'Piano Man' by Billy Joel, was selected by the US Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry for its "cultural, historic, or artistic significance." The record made it only to the 25th spot on the Hot 100 in 1974, yet still became Billy Joel's signature song. It is also ranked at the 421st spot in the 2004 list of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
