1965: The Temptations released 'Its Growing', which is the follow-up to 'My Girl', and was the first to feature David Ruffin as the new lead singer of the band. Both songs were the only Motown tunes that were ever covered by Otis Redding.

1966: Simon and Garfunkel made their UK singles chart debut with their song 'Homeward Bound.' It is said that Paul Simon wrote the song at Farnworth railway station, Widnes, England, while he was stranded overnight waiting for a train. A plaque is displayed in the station to commemorate this, although memorabilia hunters have stolen it several times. The song describes Simon's longing to return home, both to his girlfriend then, Kathy Chitty in Brentwood, Essex, England, and to the United States. The song also reached the No.5 spot in the US chart.

1973: During a concert by Lou Reed in Buffalo, New York, a fan jumped on stage and bit Reed on the bottom. The fan was thrown out of the theatre and Lou Reed eventually completed the entire concert.

 

1973: The O'Jays topped the US singles chart with 'Love Train.' The lyrics of the song of unity mention several countries, including: England, Russia, China, Egypt and Israel, and the continent of Africa.

1979: The Bee Gees started a two week run at the top of the US singles chart with 'Tragedy', the band's eighth US No.1 and also a No.1 hit in the UK.

 

1985: 'Easy Lover' by Philip Bailey (who was a former vocalist with the band Earth Wind & Fire) and Phil Collins topped the UK singles chart. Collins produced, drummed and sang on the song.

1990: Sinead O'Connor topped the UK album chart with 'I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got'. The album features the single famous and successful single 'Nothing Compares To You. The album also topped the charts in 13 other countries and spent six weeks at the top of the US chart.

2002: Gareth Gates became the youngest male solo artist that scored a UK No.1 with his debut song, 'Unchained Melody'. He was only 17 years and 255 days old and had won second place on TV's 'Pop Idol' show. It was the fourth time that the song had topped the UK chart.
