Today: June 5.

 

1961: Roy Orbison topped the US chart with the song 'Running Scared', which reached the No.9 spot in the UK. The B-side 'Love Hurts' also played a lot and got good amount of airplay. This made Orbison's first hit.

 

1964: The Rolling Stones played their first-ever live date in USA. The Stones appeared at the Swing Auditorium, San Bernardino, California promoting their first album release The Rolling Stones, in North America.

1964: 'Liza Jane' became the first recording that was released as a single by David Bowie. He released it under the name Davie Jones with the King Bees. The song was promoted in various medias and places like television shows Ready Steady Go!, Juke Box Jury and The Beat Room as well as getting good radio coverage, the single did not succeed and sold very poorly. As a result, the band was subsequently dropped from the label Vocalion Pop.

 

1971: 'Ram', Paul McCartney's second solo album, started a two-week run at the top of the UK chart. It features the US No.1 hit single 'Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey'.

1975: While the band members of Pink Floyd were recording Wish You Were Here at Abbey Road Studios, London, England, Syd Barrett showed up out of the blue they were listening to playbacks of Shine On You Crazy Diamond, a song that was about Syd Barrett. By that time, Barrett was 29 years old Barrett, head shaved of all his hair (including his eyebrows), he became overweight, and all of Pink Floyd band members simply didn't recognize Barrett at first. He eventually left without saying goodbye, and none of the band members ever saw him again.

1990: Jim Hodder, who was an american drummer, drowned in his swimming pool at the age of 42. He was the original drummer with Steely Dan and also worked with David Soul and Sammy Hagar.

 

2002: Dee Dee Ramone, (Douglas Glenn Colvin), who was the bass guitarist of the Ramones, died at his apartment in Hollywood, California due to a heroin overdose at the age of 49. He was the bands's primary songwriter, penning songs such as 'Poison Heart', '53rd & 3rd' and 'Rockaway Beach'.

 

2007: Sir Paul McCartney released ‘Memory Almost Full’, his 21st solo album, on the new Hear Music Starbucks label. It was reported later on that all the copies sold through UK Starbucks would not be eligible for the UK charts because the 533 stores were not registered with the Official Chart Company. The album was being played non-stop in over 10,000 Starbucks outlets across 29 countries.
