1967: The Beatles started a 23 week run at the top of the UK album chart with Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The album was recorded over a 129-day period, when recording began in December 1966. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time and includes the songs 'A Day in the Life' and 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds'.

1969: Seven years after his first hit, Tommy Roe topped the UK singles chart with the song 'Dizzy', his only No.1 hit. It topped the UK charts again in 1991 with the version of Vic Reeves and Wonder Stuff to the song.

1977: 'In The City', the debut single by The Jam, reached the No.40 spot on the UK singles chart. The band scored 18 consecutive Top 40 singles in the UK, from their debut in 1977 up until their break-up in December 1982, including 4 chart topper hits.

 

1983: The Police started a four week run at the top of the UK singles chart with 'Every Breath You Take', the band's fifth and final No.1 hit. The song is taken from their album Synchronicity. Sting won Song of the Year and The Police won Best Pop Performance for the song at the 1984 Grammy Awards.

1984: Bruce Springsteen released 'Born In The USA', which became the best-selling album of 1985 in the US. It is also Springsteen's most successful album to date. It produced 7 Top 10 singles, which is a tie with Michael Jackson and his album Thriller, as well as a tie with Janet Jackson's album Rhythm Nation 1814.

1994: Wet Wet Wet started a fifteen-week run at the top of the UK singles chart with 'Love Is All Around'. It features in the movie 'Four Weddings & A Funeral'. The song was written by Reg Presley from The Troggs and was also a former Top 10 hit for his band in the year 1967.

1997: The body of Jeff Buckley was discovered floating in the Mississippi River. He had disappeared when he went for a swim on May 29 in Wolf River Harbor. He was wearing boots, all of his clothing, and sang the chorus of 'Whole Lotta Love' by Led Zeppelin. A roadie in the band of Buckley decided to remain on shore. After the roadie moved a guitar and a radio out of reach of the wake from a passing tugboat, he looked up and saw that Buckley had vanished.

 

2006: Sandi Thom topped the UK singles chart with the song 'I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker, (with flowers in My Hair'). The song was originally released back in October 2005 by Viking Legacy records and reached the No.55 spot.
