Today: June 25.

 

1964: Roy Orbison topped the UK singles chart with 'It's Over', Orbison's second UK No.1 hit. He was the first American artist that scored a UK No.1 in the past 47 weeks.

 

1966: The Beatles started a two week run at the top of the US singles chart with 'Paperback Writer', the band's 12th US No.1 hit. The song is marked by the boosted bass guitar sound throughout, partly in response to John Lennon's demand to know why the bass on a certain Wilson Pickett record far exceeded the bass on any of The Beatles albums. It was also cut louder than any other album, thanks to a new piece of equipment that was used in the mastering process.

1969: The Hollies recorded the song 'He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother'. Bob Russell (who was dying of cancer of the lymph nodes) and Bobby Scott wrote the ballad. The two met in person only three times, but succeeded to collaborate in order to write this song. The song features Elton John on piano and was re-released in late 1988 in the UK for a Miller Lite beer commercial.

1977: Marvin Gaye topped the US singles chart with the song 'Got To Give It Up', his third US No.1.

 

1983: The Police scored their fourth UK No.1 album with 'Synchronicity', which also topped the US chart. The album features the singles 'Wrapped Around Your Finger' and 'Every Breath You Take'.

1988: Hillel Slovak, who was the founding member and original guitarist of Red Hot Chili Peppers, died from a heroin overdose shortly after the band returned from a tour in Europe. He recorded two albums with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Freaky Styley and The Uplift Mofo Party Plan.

1988: Debbie Gibson topped the US singles chart with the song 'Foolish Beat'. This made Debbie who was 17 years old at the time, the youngest female that wrote, produced and recorded a US No.1 single. The song reached the No.9 spot in the UK.

2009: Michael Jackson died at his home in Beverly Hills, due to a heart failure. He was 50 years old. Michael was the eighth child of the Jackson family and made his debut with his brothers as a member of The Jackson 5 in 1964. Michael Jackson is credited for making the music video to an art form and a promotional tool, with four of his solo albums are among the world's best-selling records: Off the Wall (1979), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991) and HIStory (1995). The album Thriller from 1982 is the best-selling record of all time, with sales of more than 50 million copies worldwide.
