Today: June 20.

 

1969: David Bowie recorded 'Space Oddity' at Trident Studios London. The song became a UK No.1 hit when it was re-released in 1975. It is written about the launch of a fictional astronaut by the name of Major Tom. David Bowie revisited later the character of Major Tom in the songs 'Ashes to Ashes' and 'Hallo Spaceboy'.

 

1981: Stars on 45 topped the US singles chart, a medley of Beatles songs set to a disco beat. It was the start of a flood of 'Stars On' hits including Stars on Status Quo, Stevie Wonder, Chas & Dave and punk songs.

 

1992: Mariah Carey scored her sixth US No.1 single with the song 'I'll Be There', which also reached the No.2 spot in the UK. The song also topped the US chart for The Jackson Five in 1970.

1997: Lawrence Payton of The Four Tops died at the age of 59 from liver cancer. Had the 1965 US No.1 single 'I Can't Help Myself' and the 1967 UK No.6 single 'Standing In The Shadows of Love'.

1999: Jamiroquai topped the UK album chart with 'Synkronized', the band's second No.1 album.

2006: Claydes Charles Smith, who was the co-founder and lead guitarist of Kool & the Gang died at the age of 57 after a long illness. The band had the successful 1981 US No.1 & UK No.7 single 'Celebration' as well as 15 other Top 40 hits.
