1957: Johnnie Ray topped the UK singles chart with 'Yes Tonight Josephine', Ray's third and final UK No.1. He became deaf in his right ear at the age of 13 after an accident during a Boy Scout "blanket toss," a variation of the trampoline. (He later performed using a hearing aid).

 

1962: Ray Charles started a five week run at the top of the US singles chart with the ballad 'I Can't Stop Loving You' by Don Gibson. The song also topped the UK chart.

 

1966: Frank Sinatra topped the UK singles chart with 'Strangers In The Night', Sinatra's second UK No.1. The song was originally composed by Avo Uvezian as 'Broken Guitar', later the title changed to 'Beddy Bye' as part of the instrumental score for the movie A Man Could Get Killed.

 

1973: Paul McCartney topped both the US singles chart and the US albums chart. His album 'Red Rose Speedway' was No.1 on the album chart, while his single 'My Love' started a four week run at the top of the singles chart.

1978: Thin Lizzy released 'Live And Dangerous', their live double album. The album was recorded in Philadelphia, London and Toronto in 1977, when the band toured to promote the albums Johnny The Fox and Bad Reputation.

 

1979: Donna Summer started a three week run at the top of the US singles chart with 'Hot Stuff', Summer's second US No.1 hit. The single reached the No.11 spot in the UK.

 

1984: Wham! had their first UK No.1 hit with 'Wake Me Up Before You Go Go.' The song was written and produced by George Michael and the inspiration for the song was a scribbled note that his partner Andrew Ridgeley for his parents. The note was originally intended to read "wake me up before you go" but the word "up" was written twice by accident, so Ridgeley wrote "go" twice on purpose.

 

2008: Bo Diddley, American guitarist and singer , (Ellas died due to a heart failure at his home in Archer, Florida at the age of 79. Diddley was known for his homemade square guitar and his 'shave and a haircut, two bits' rhythm that influenced artists and musicians like Bruce Springsteen, Buddy Holly, U2 and The Rolling Stones.
