1964: A riot broke out during a Rolling Stones gig at The Empress Ballroom in Blackpool, Lancashire, after Keith Richards aims a kick at a yob who was spitting at the group. Two policemen and 30 fans were injured during this riot and the overall damage was estimated at over £4,000.

1976: Elton John scored his first UK #1 single with ‘Don't Go Breaking My Heart’ which he performed with Kiki Dee. The song was written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin under the pseudonym "Ann Orson" and "Carte Blanche". The two met when Dee was working as a backing singer. Elton John would later re-record the song with RuPaul for his 1993 'Duets' album.

1977: The original Led Zeppelin played their last ever show in the United States. Two days after the concert at the Oakland Coliseum, Robert Plant learned that his son Karac has died, which resulted in cancellation of the rest of their tour.

1982: Survivor started a 6 week run at #1 on the US singles chart with 'Eye Of The Tiger', the song that featured in the film 'Rocky III'. Also #1 in the UK. They won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance for this song.

 

2003: Ozzy Osbourne long-standing tour manager, Bobby Thompson, was found dead in his Detroit hotel room. Thompson had been battling throat cancer.
