Today: July 17.

 

1959: Billie Holiday died in a New York City hospital from cirrhosis of the liver after years of alcohol abuse. He was 43 years old. At that time, Holiday was under arrest for heroin possession, with Police officers right by her at the door to her room. In the final years of Holiday's life, she had been progressively swindled out of her earnings, and she died with only $0.70 in her bank account.

 

1965: King Records released James Brown's song 'Papa's Got a Brand New Bag', which sold more than 2 million copies and received the Grammy Award for best for Best Rhythm & Blues Recording. The song is considered seminal in the emergence of funk music as a distinct style.

 

1967: John Coltrane, who was an American jazz saxophonist and composer, died at the age of 40, due to liver cancer at Huntington Hospital in Long Island, New York. He worked with Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis, and released the album ‘A Love Supreme’ in 1964.

 

1967: The Beatles released the single 'All You Need Is Love / Baby You're A Rich Man' (originally called 'One Of The Beautiful People') in the US. The single became the band's 14th US No.1

1976: Demis Roussos topped the UK singles chart with 'The Roussos Phenomenon EP'. It was Roussos only UK No.1 and the only No.1 EP that topped the charts in the 1970's.

 

1978: Simple Minds made their live debut at The Satellite Club, Glasgow. They are the most commercially successful Scottish band of the 1980s, and have scored five UK No.1 albums during their music career. They have also sold more than 70 million records all over the world.

1982: Irene Cara topped the UK singles chart with the song 'Fame', which was based on the hit TV series about a New York drama school. She played the role of Coco Hernandez in the original movie and also won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and the Golden Globe Award for the same.

 

1993: Take That scored first UK No.1 single with the song 'Pray'. It was their first of eight No.1 hits, and from that moment, the band went to become the most successful British boy band of the 1990s.

1993: Guns N' Roses performed at River Plate Stadium in Buenos Aires, Argentina to approximately 80,000 fans. It was the final show on the band's Use Your Illusion Tour. The highlight of the night was English drummer Cozy Powell as he played drums with Matt Sorum, who was dressed as a Domino's Pizza delivery boy.
