1963: The Rolling Stones played their first show outside London when they performed at The Alcove Club, Middlesbrough, Yorkshire. They were supporting The Hollies.

1964: The Animals topped the UK singles chart with the song 'The House Of The Rising Sun.' The song was recorded in one take and was the first UK No.1 hit that had a playing time of more than four minutes.

1967: Pink Floyd played on BBC Top Of The Pops which was hosted by Pete Murray for the second time. The performed on the show in order to promote their new single 'See Emily Play'. It peaked at No.6 on the UK chart.

1968: Black Sabbath played their first show at a small backstreet Blues club in Birmingham, England.

 

1974: Elton John started a two-week run at the top of the UK album chart with 'Caribou', his eighth studio release and third No.1 album. It containes the singles: 'The Bitch Is Back' and 'Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me'.

1974: George McCrae started a two week run at the top of the US singles chart with the song 'Rock Your Baby', his only US No.1 and also No.1 in the UK. It is regarded as the first Disco No.1 and was a New York City club hit first.

1985: Duran Duran became the first act that had a No.1 hit on the US singles chart with a James Bond song and theme when 'A View To A Kill', topped the charts.

1991: Bryan Adams topped the UK singles chart with the song 'Everything I Do I Do It For You', taken from the soundtrack for the film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. The song went to stay at the top of the chart for a record-breaking 16 weeks, thus breaking a record which was held since 1955. It also topped the US singles chart and stayed there for 7 weeks, as well as being a hit in 16 other countries worldwide. The song won a Grammy Award for Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture in 1992.

1997: The Prodigy started a five-week run at the top of the UK album chart with 'The Fat Of The Land'.
