Today: January 24.

 

1958: Elvis Presley was topped the UK singles chart with 'Jailhouse Rock'. It became the first ever single that entered the chart at No.1 and was Elvis Presley's second UK No.1. It sold more than 4 million copies in the US.

 

1958: The Quarry Men appeared at The Cavern Club in Liverpool, (it was the band's only performance at the club). Three years later, they appeared at the club again, but under their new name as The Beatles.

1969: The Doors performed at Madison Square Garden, New York City and were paid more than $50,000 for the show. It made them one of the highest paid acts that year.

 

1970: Led Zeppelin performed at Leeds University, Leeds, England. It was at this gig, when the band members met with fine arts lecturer Zacron in order to discuss their ideas for the album sleeve of their next album, 'Led Zeppelin III'. Zacron, who born Richard Drew, had studied at Kingston College of Art with members of the Yardbirds.

1976: Bob Dylan began a five week run at the top of the US chart with 'Desire', his 17th studio album. The album features the song 'Hurricane', which protests the conviction of former middleweight boxer Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter for triple murder in 1966, arguing for his innocence.

1980: A billboard was erected on Sunset Strip, West Hollywood, California in order to promote 'The Wall', Pink Floyd's new album. A blank wall was pasted up and each day a brick was ‘removed’, slowly revealing the inside spread and title of the album.

1981: Adam And The Ants began a 10-week run at the top of the UK chart with 'Kings Of The Wild Frontier', their debut album.

1992: Nirvana played their first ever concert in Australia at the Phoenician Club in Sydney. Also on the bill were Tumbleweed and The Meanies.

 

1999: The Offspring topped the UK singles chart with 'Pretty Fly, For A White Guy'. The song is taken from their fifth studio album 'Americana' and reached the top of the charts in 10 other countries worldwide.
