Today: January 21.

 

1965: More than 3,000 screaming fans greeted The Rolling Stones and Roy Orbison at Sydney Airport when they arrived for a 16 date tour of Australia and New Zealand.

1966: George Harrison married Patti Boyd at Leatherhead Register Office in Surrey. Paul McCartney was the best man at the ceremony. Harrison had first met Boyd on the set of The Beatles movie 'A Hard Day's Night'. She left Harrison in the mid-'70s and started an affair with Eric Clapton, who was Harrison's friend. Clapton also wrote the song "Layla" about Boyd. The two married in May 1979, but split in 1988.

 

1968: Jimi Hendrix recorded his own version 'All Along the Watchtower' by Bob Dylan at Olympic Studios in London. Brian Jones from The Rolling Stones and Dave Mason from Traffic both played on the session. The song was released in the US as a single in 1968, reaching the No.20 spot.

 

1972: Pink Floyd performed at The Guildhall, Portsmouth, England. It was the first time that they were able to perform all the songs of what would become The Dark Side of The Moon album in its entirety. They had to stop the previous night's try after suffering some technical difficulties.

1978: The soundtrack album 'Saturday Night Fever' started a 24 week run at the top of the US album charts. It sold over 30 million copies all over the world, which made it the best selling soundtrack album of all time.

 

1987: Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones inducted Aretha Franklin at the 2nd annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Awards, which took place in New York City. Richards later took part in a jam with Bruce Springsteen, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Roy Orbison, Sting, and Daryl Hall.

1989: Six weeks after he died, Roy Orbison started a three-week run at the top of the UK album chart with 'The Legendary Roy Orbison' collection.

 

2012: Adele topped the US album chart with her second studio album '21'. The album had five hit singles including the lead single 'Rolling in the Deep', has now sold more than 26.4 million copies all over the world.
