1964: The Rolling Stones made their second appearance on Top Of The Pops, a BBC TV show. They performed the song 'Not Fade Away'.

1967: Pink Floyd continued their work on the band's debut album, The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn at Abbey Road Studios, London. The album was written entirely by Syd Barrett except for two instrumentals that were composed by the entire band and one Roger Waters song.

1971: Five months after she died, Janis Joplin started a nine-week run at the top of the US album chart with her second and last solo studio album, Pearl. She sang on all tracks except 'Buried Alive in the Blues', which remained a Full Tilt Boogie instrumental, that was because she died before the had time to add her vocals to the track.

 

1988: George Michael scored his sixth No.1 US single with 'Father Figure', also a No. 11 hit in the UK. It was the first time that George Michael had failed to reach the top ten in the UK.

 

1991: James Brown got out of prison, as he was paroled after he spent two years of a six-year prison sentence, imposed for resisting arrest after a car chase across two States.

 

1999: Britney Spears started a two-week run at the top of the UK singles chart with '...Baby One More Time'. The song became the biggest UK selling single of the year and was also a No.1 hit in the US. It was originally written for TLC, but was submitted after the band already completed their third record, FanMail.
