Today: April 30.

 

1957: Elvis Presley recorded the Leiber and Stoller song 'Jailhouse Rock' as featured in his third motion picture of the same name. Mike Stoller had a small role in the movie as a piano player. The song later became the first song that debuted at the top of the UK chart.

 

1960: The Everly Brothers started a seven week run at the top of the UK singles chart with the song 'Cathy's Clown'. This gave Warner Bros the No.1 spot with their first ever release.

 

1966: 'Aftermath', the fourth album by The Rolling Stones, topped the UK chart. It was their third UK No.1 album. Aftermath album is considered an artistic breakthrough for The Rolling Stones and is the first that was consisted entirely of compositions by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, while Brian Jones played a variety of instruments not usually associated with their music, which included Appalachian dulcimer, sitar, Japanese koto and marimbas.

1976: Keith Moon, drummer of The Who, paid nine cab drivers to block-off both ends of a New York street in order to throw the contents of his hotel room out of the window.

1977: Led Zeppelin broke a new world attendance record during a concert. The band played a concert to an audience of 76,229 people at a show at the Pontiac Silverdome, Pontiac, Michigan. The previous record was held by The Who, after they played to an audience of 75,962 people.

1983: Michael Jackson started a three week run at the top of the US singles chart with the song 'Beat It'. This was his fifth solo US No.1. Eddie Van Halen played guitar on the song's distinctive overdriven guitar solo, but his record company prevented from appearing in Jackson's music video for the song.

 

1999: Darrell Sweet, drummer of Nazareth, died at the age of 52. He suffered a fatal heart attack before a show in New Albany, Indiana. The band had the 1973 UK No.9 single 'Broken Down Angel' and the 1976 US No. 8 single 'Love Hurts'.

2015: Soul and R&B singer, Ben E. King (Benjmin Earl Nelson), died at the Hackensack University Medical Center at the age of 76. He was part of the band The Driffters who had the 1960 US No.1 & UK No.2 single 'Save The Last Dance For Me'. Ben E. King also had the the 1987 UK No.1 solo single 'Stand By Me', which was first released in 1961.
