The Pretenders are an English-American rock band that was formed in 1978 in Hereford, England, with the original band consisting of Chrissie Hynde (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), James Honeyman-Scott (lead guitar, backing vocals, keyboards), Pete Farndon (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Martin Chambers (drums, backing vocals, percussion).

Over the years, The Pretenders went through 14 different line-up changes, with Chrissie Hynde the only continuous band member that never left the band. Eight of these line-up changes happened during the first decade of the band's existence, due to drug problems, personality clashes and deaths. Even Martin Chambers, the band's drummer, left the band in 1986 until 1993 when he rejoined The Pretenders.

Chrissie Hynde decided to launch a solo career in 2014 and the Pretenders were dormant as a band between the years 2012-2016. However, the band is active once again, releasing a new album and back to worldwide tours again since 2016.

The song "Don't Get Me Wrong" by The Pretenders was written by lead singer Chrissy Hynde, and describes the complexities of love from a female perspective. She's inconsistent, but wonderful, and wants her lover to know that he shouldn't get too worked up, because she could change quickly.

Chrissy Hynde actually wrote "Don't Get Me Wrong" for tennis player John McEnroe, who was an aspiring musician. This song was also the last big US hit for The Pretenders, which frustrated Hynde. So, she decided to ask the top songwriters Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly to write some songs for her. This eventually resulted with the amazing song "I'll Stand By You."
