The song "Living Next Door to Alice" was first recorded by New World in 1972, and in 1976, the song was released by Smokie, for whom it was a massive hit, topping the charts in 7 countries.

In the song, the singer is heartbroken because Alice, who was his neighbor for 24 years, is leaving and moving away. He never expressed his feelings for her, but he thought about her a lot.

In the last verse of the song, the singer's other neighbor, Sally, says that she's been waiting for him 24 years, and that she's still here, but he ignores her and continues to pine for Alice.
