Shakira (real name: Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll) is a Colombian singer, songwriter and dancer. Her first studio albumsMagia and Peligro, failed to succeed in the 1990s, but eventually she was able to rise to fame in Latin America with her major-label debut, Pies Descalzos from 1996, and with her fourth album, Dónde Están los Ladrones? from 1998.

In 2001, Shakira entered the English-language market with her fifth album, Laundry Service, with the lead single in the album, "Whenever, Wherever", becoming one of the most successful singles of 2002. Since then, shakira is widely regarded as the Queen of Latin Pop.

Shakira's eleventh album El Dorado is one of the most streamed albums of all time with more than 10 billion streams across all the streaming platforms, which makes her the most streamed female artist in 2017 across the globe.

Here are a few interesting facts about Shakira:

1. Freddy Demann has helped Shakira make the transition to the English language. Demann was the one who launched Michael Jackson's solo career, along with Alanis Morissette and Madonna.

2. Her full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll. "Shakira" is arabic for "full of grace."

3. She was rejected from the school choir because the teacher thought her vibrato was too strong and she sounded like a goat.

Shakira has received and won numerous awards, among them are: 3 Grammy Awards, 5 MTV Video Music Awards, 7 Billboard Music Awards, 13 Latin Grammy Awards and 39 Billboard Latin Music Awards 

Overall to this day, Shakira ha sold over 75 million records, making her one of the world's best-selling music artistsShe is also the best selling latin female artist of all time in the US, selling more than 33.7 million estimated records.
