Did You Know? Iggy Pop Fighting Motorbike Gang MembersJanuary 28, 2014

Iggy Pop is without a doubt a very flamboyant performer and the one who is credited for being the first to do a stage-dive. His performances on stage are always entertaining in his own way and include exposing himself to the audience, rolling around in broken glass and even vomiting on stage and more. Iggy is the one who performs his acts and starts the riots as well with his ability to whip the entire crowd into frenzy.

It was on February 9, 1974 when The Stooges performed at Detroit's Michigan Palace as it was the band's last show before they broke up for 30 years. Before the concert, Iggy gave an interesting radio interview challenging "The Scorpions", a Detroit motorbike gang to fight him. Iggy called the gang members a bunch of cats and in response to this interview and Iggy's challenge, the bikers decided to attend the 1974 concert of Iggy Pop and The Stooges.

During the show, the gang members pelted Iggy and the band with broken glass, eggs, ice, beer jugs, shovels, jelly beans and urine, but despite all this hostility Iggy continued taunting the crowd, saying and I quote: "You pricks can throw everything in the world…your girlfriend will still love me."

It seems that Iggy and the band were actually feeding off the crowd's anger and thus continued their show and concert on stage. During the performance Iggy Pop told the crowd and I quote again: "All right you assholes, want to hear Louie, Louie, we'll give it to you."

The band continued to play a 45 minute version of the song "Louie Louie" including improvised lyrics by Iggy Pop.

Now we're getting to the best part of the story. As the concert was ending, Iggy focused all of his attention on a particular biker and gang member and told him as I quote: "Listen, asshole, you heckle me one more time and I'm gonna come down there and kick your ass."

The gang member challenged Iggy to come down which he did as Iggy jumped off the stage and the fight was on! This fight ended with the gang member and biker beating the crap out of Iggy, but it's great to know Iggy is not afraid of anyone and is always ready to fight for his causes.

In the band's album titled "Metallic K.O." you can actually hear beer bottles breaking against guitar strings and this album is among the favorites by many of Iggy Pop's fans.
