Dexys Midnight Runners are an English pop band which also combines elements of soul in their music. The band achieved major success during the early to mid 1980s, and their best known hits are "Come On Eileen" and "Geno", both songs peaking at No.1 on the UK Singles Chart. The band also had 6 other Top 20 singles.

The song "Come On Eileen" sounded nothing like the other hits of the era, the 1980s. There are no synthesizers on the song, but there is banjo, fiddle, accordion and saxophone.

The song is actually based on a true story, as Eileen was a girl that band member Kevin Rowland grew up with. Their relationship became became romantic when the two were 13 years old, and according to Rowland, it turned sexual a year or two later.

Kevin Rowland was raised catholic and also served as an altar boy in church, so sex was a taboo subject, and considered "dirty", but it fascinated him. In the song, Rowland is expressing the feelings of his first sexual relationship and dreaming of being free from the strictures of a buttoned-down society.
